If you’re a business owner, you’ve probably made it a habit to respond to your Google reviews. That’s a good thing. But if most of your responses look like “Thanks so much, we appreciate your business,” you’re treating reviews like a courtesy instead of what they really are: a ranking signal.


Google doesn’t just look at how many reviews you have or what your star rating is. It reads the actual content of those reviews to better understand your business. And just as importantly, it reads your responses. Every reply you write is additional context that helps Google connect your business to specific services and locations.


Reviews Help Google Understand What You Do and Where You Do It

When someone searches for a service (whether that’s “pest control near me” or “chiropractor in Carroll, Iowa”) Google’s job is to return the most relevant results. It does that by pulling from a combination of your website, your Google Business Profile, and your overall activity. Reviews are one of the strongest signals in that mix.


The words your customers use in their reviews carry weight. If someone says, “They helped us with a bat problem in our attic,” that gives Google a clear data point about the type of work you do. If they mention a city or county, that reinforces your geographic relevance.


Over time, as those reviews stack up, Google starts to build a clearer picture of your business; your specialties, your service area, and the types of problems you solve most often.


Your Responses Are an Untapped SEO Opportunity

A good response doesn’t need to be long, but it does need to be intentional. The goal is to sound natural while still reinforcing key details about your business.


Instead of replying with a short thank-you, expand slightly by referencing the service you provided and, when it makes sense, the location. For example, thanking someone for trusting you with a specific type of service in a specific area immediately gives your response more substance.


It’s also worth acknowledging something from the review itself. If they mention fast service, professionalism, or a specific problem you solved, reflect that back in your response. This not only makes your reply feel more genuine, but it also adds more descriptive language to your profile (language that can align with how future customers search).


If you consistently and naturally include what you do and where you do it, your responses become an asset.


Getting More Reviews Requires a System

None of this works if you’re only getting a handful of reviews each year. Volume and consistency still matter.


The businesses that perform well in local search are usually the ones that have built review generation into their day-to-day operations. They ask at the right time, make it easy for customers to leave a review, and follow up consistently.


The timing piece is especially important. The best moment to ask for a review is right after a positive interaction, when the experience is still fresh. Waiting too long lowers the likelihood that someone will follow through.


Ease of access matters just as much. Sending a direct link to your Google review page removes friction and significantly increases completion rates. If a customer has to search for your business on their own, many simply won’t bother.


If you have the ability to automate this process through your CRM or scheduling software, it’s worth doing. Automation ensures that every customer gets the same follow-up without relying on memory or manual effort.


The Long-Term Impact on Local Rankings

One optimized review response won’t move your business to the top of search results overnight. This works because of consistency over time.


If you’re regularly getting reviews and responding to each one with clear, relevant language, you are steadily building a body of content that reinforces your services and your service area. Over the course of months, that adds up to dozens of keyword-rich entries tied directly to your business.


In competitive markets, that can be the difference between showing up in the local pack or getting buried beneath competitors who are more active. In smaller markets, it’s often enough to put you ahead of businesses that have been around longer but aren’t paying attention to these details.
